The best time to trim most trees is during late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. During dormancy, trees are less susceptible to stress from pruning, and the bare canopy makes it easier to see the structure, one more reason winter pruning works so well for structural work.
Summer trimming is appropriate for corrective pruning, removing damaged branches, or controlling growth.
